My trip down memory lane in the last entry got me wondering about the fate of the SLO Triathlon. I hadn’t a peep about for 15 years or so. I just assumed (and yes I know what happens when you assume) that like so many of the other races from the mid 90’s it was gone. Imagine my surprise at finding this:

Yesterday was the 38th annual SLO Triathlon and it is still being run on the same course. My first reaction was “#$%^&*$ I missed it!!” but then reality and my ability to spin anything kicked in. Instead trying to pull off a last minute, slap dash road trip I have a whole year to plan this out. If I go and race next year in the 39th annual race it will mark the 25 years since I did it the first time. I admit it doesn’t sound as cool as 40/25 but let’s face, at 26 I wasn’t planning on what I would be doing at 50. I am working on rounding up a support team (aka people to drink with after) to go with me. That in its self will be fun because unless staying overnight is involved NO ONE goes to see me do an event. The travel races that I have family and friends along for will all get talked about some point but as a spoiler they include: Wildflower, Vineman and Marin (all have stories – some better than others). Part of why SLO is special for me is that it is where I went to college so I spent 4 really fun, painful, bizarre and important years of my life there. Most of my best friends are a product of that time so any chance to go back is always highly coveted.
Promise that at some day I will do a blog entry that is not some glimpse at the past but for now I see backwards better than forwards.
Side note: they have had better posters in the past.
