Evening Run – July 25th

It was good to see Daisy and the kids playing in the creek, they always make me smile.

Never thought I would say this but I really enjoyed my run last night.  Seeing as I hate running and to this day feel that the “Runners High” is a myth – like Bigfoot and the idea of a permanent high school record.   I ran four miles and took me about 55 minutes.  For your average runner that is slow but for me it was good enough to be in my top 10%.  The distance is still way short of where I need to be for October in order to avoid repeating what happened the last few times I have done the Rock n’ Roll half.  In the past I never trained for any real distance beyond 3 miles.  I always finish the race (there is a lot to be said for being stubborn) but I am physically wrecked.  Severe blisters, muscle cramps and VERY sore knees/hips tend to be the common theme for me.  Bottom line is that I am limping for about a week afterwards and each year it gets worse.  In fact, two years ago, it was so bad that I skipped last year altogether.  This year my goal is to be running nine or ten miles once a week (with two shorter runs each week) by the end of September.  I have to admit that I am having a MENTAL issue with passing the five-mile mark right now.  Not sure why I am not slamming six miles out already because 10k’s are just a matter of time for me, not difficulty.  It is possible that my issue is knowing that going beyond 6 miles will put me into territory that I associate with pain.  The other possibility is that I am feeling fat and lazy.  Regardless of the reason, I will have to use my stubborn streak (it is sort of my super power) to break through the ceiling resistance (heard that in some discussion on stock prices) in the very near future.

At least I am running farther than the distance I need for my next Triathlon so all is good for now.
